1

There is a land of pure delight,Where saints immortal reign;Infinite day excludes the night,And pleasures banish pain. There everlasting spring abidesAnd never-withering flowers,And but a little space dividesThis heavenly land from ours.

2

O could we make our doubts remove,Those gloomy doubts that rise,And see the Canaan that we love,With unbeclouded eyes;Could we but climb where Moses stood,And view the landscape o'er,—Not all this world's pretended goodCould ever charm us more.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: running head «REWARD OF SAINTS.»; hymn number «989» (large), tune name «VARINA. C. M. D.» centred over the music (the «D.» in small capitals), «George F. Root.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «There»; its eight verse lines are given here as poetry, the syllables joined into whole words («In - fi - nite day ex-» / «cludes» = «Infinite day excludes»; «pleas-ures ban-ish» = «pleasures banish»; «ev - er-last-ing» = «everlasting»; «a - bides» = «abides»; «lit - tle» = «little»). «nev - er-withering» is printed with a hyphen after «er» like the syllable hyphens of «ev - er-last-ing»; it is written «never-withering» here, keeping the printed hyphen (see uncertainties.md). Stanza 2 is printed as text in the left column below the music, under the reference line «486, 686.» in italics (= may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 486 or 686), with the stanza number printed without a full stop («2 O could»), numbered «2.» here like stanza 1. «Isaac Watts.» in italics after stanza 2. The print sets a thin space before «;» («reign ;», «eyes ;»); it is closed up here. «o'er,—» (comma + em dash) as printed; straight apostrophes. An ink blot of the exemplar covers part of «pretended» and of «us» in the last two lines of stanza 2 (both still readable). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. Lines 2, 4, 6 and 8 of the text stanza are indented in the print.
