Beautiful Zion, built above,Beautiful city that I love,Beautiful gates of pearly white,Beautiful temple, God its light,—

Beautiful trees forever there,Beautiful fruit they always bear,Beautiful rivers gliding by,Beautiful fountains never dry,—

Beautiful light without the sun,Beautiful day revolving on,Beautiful worlds on worlds untold,Beautiful streets of shining gold,—

Beautiful crowns on every brow,Beautiful palms the conquerors show,Beautiful robes the ransomed wear,Beautiful all who enter there,—

Beautiful throne of God, the Lamb,Beautiful seats at his right hand,Beautiful rest,—all wanderings cease,—Beautiful home of perfect peace.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: running head «REWARD OF SAINTS.» (shared with hymn 997 on the same page); hymn number «996» (large), tune name «BEAUTIFUL ZION. 8s.» centred over the music (condensed display capitals), «UNKNOWN.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before it: system 1 «Beau - ti - ful Zi - on, built a - bove, Beau - ti - ful cit - y that I love,», system 2 «Beau - ti - ful gates of pearl - y white, Beau - ti - ful tem - ple, God its light,—»; the syllable hyphens are joined here. No reference line is printed. Stanzas 2–5 follow as text in two columns separated by a vertical rule (2–3 left, 4–5 right), numbered «2» … «5» without a full stop (written «2.» etc. here), every line flush with the first; «Anon.» in italics after stanza 5. Spelling, punctuation (including the dashes «,—») and capitals are the print's. A handwritten note of the exemplar above the running head is not part of the print (see uncertainties.md).
