Blest be the tie that binds

  • No. 1022
  • Words John Fawcett.
  • 6 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

Blest be the tie that bindsOur hearts in Christian love! The fellowship of kindred mindsIs like to that above.

2

Before our Father's throneWe pour our ardent prayers; Our fears, our hopes, our aims are one,—Our comforts, and our cares.

3

We share our mutual woes,Our mutual burdens bear,And often for each other flowsThe sympathizing tear.

4

When we asunder part,It gives us inward pain; But we shall still be joined in heart,And hope to meet again.

5

This glorious hope revivesOur courage by the way; While each in expectation lives,And longs to see the day.

6

From sorrow, toil, and pain,And sin, we shall be free; And perfect love and friendship reignThrough all eternity.

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «1022» (large) in the left column of p. 350, under hymn 1021 («Timothy Dwight.»), with the reference line «688, 266, 89.» in italic figures beside it (sing to the tune of hymn 688 DENNIS, 266 NARES or 89 DOVE, all S. M.). No meter is printed; the four lines 6.6.8.6 are S. M., like the three tunes. Stanzas 1–3 stand at the foot of the left column; stanzas 4–6 continue at the top of the right column, above hymn 1023, followed by «John Fawcett.» in italics (the J an italic swash capital). Stanzas numbered «1»–«6» without periods (written «1.»–«6.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); lines 2 and 4 of each stanza indented. The first word «BLEST» is set in capitals and small capitals; written «Blest». The print sets a thin space before «!» and «;» («love !», «prayers ;», «pain ;», «way ;», «free ;»); it is closed up here, and the apostrophe is written straight («Father's»). A damaged sort in stanza 2, line 3 is read as the letter it is («oŭr» = «our»). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
