O Lord, how full of sweet content

  • No. 1039
  • Words William Cowper.
  • 3 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

O Lord, how full of sweet contentOur years of pilgrimage are spent!Where'er we dwell, we dwell with thee,At home, abroad, on land or sea.

2

To us remains nor place nor time:Our country is in every clime:We can be calm and free from careOn any shore, since God is there.

3

While place we seek, or place we shun,The soul finds happiness in none; But with our God to guide our way,'Tis equal joy to go or stay.

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «1039» (large) in the right column of p. 355, below stanza 4 of hymn 1038 and «Balfour.», with the reference line «538, 301, 914.» in italic figures beside it (sing to the tunes of hymns 538 HEBRON, 301 ROCKINGHAM or 914 WOODWORTH, all L. M.; no meter is printed — the lines 8.8.8.8 are L. M.). «LORD» (st. 1, second word) is set in capitals and small capitals (written «Lord» here). Stanzas numbered «1»–«3» without periods (written «1.»–«3.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); in this hymn ALL four lines of each stanza are set flush (no indentation of lines 2 and 4), and they are written so here. «William Cowper.» in italics, right-aligned after stanza 3. In this copy stanzas 1 and 3 are heavily inked or stained; every word reads under the stain (see `uncertainties.md`). The printer's thin space before «!», «:» and «;» («spent !», «time :», «clime :», «none ;») is closed up here; «Where'er» and «'Tis» are printed closed and kept so; apostrophes written straight. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
