⤢ Full screenHo! idlers in the vineyard,Why wasting all the day?The Master soon is comingTo bear the fruit away; Then closed will be thy mission,The harvest will be pastThe summer quickly ended,And lost thy soul at last.
Then rouse thee, idle gleaner;Perform the work at hand;Be earnest in thy duty,And ready at command.Fill well the place assigned thee,Though hard may seem thy lot; With Heaven's approbation,Be every ill forgot.
Soon, on a cloud of glory,Thy Saviour will appear,All faces gather paleness,And nations quake with fear.O then thy name he 'll honor,And for thy service now,A crown of fadeless gloryHe 'll place upon thy brow.
A mansion in the cityWhose glories far outshineThe sun in noon-day splendor,Shall evermore be thine. The jasper walls of heavenShall echo thy refrain,—The anthem of redemption,To Jesus that was slain.
About this hymn
As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «1054» (large) and the italic reference line «833, 357,» — ending with a comma, not a period (sing to the tune of hymn 833 or 357) at the foot of the left column of p. 360, below hymn 1053 («Isaac B. Woodbury.»). Stanza 1 begins there (four lines) and continues at the top of the right column without a number (four lines); stanzas 2–4 follow in the right column, «Anon.» in italics at the end. The first word «HO!» is set in capitals and small capitals. The stanza numbers are printed without a full stop («1 Ho», «2 Then»); they are numbered «1.»–«4.» here. The print sets a thin space before «!», «?» and «;» («Ho !», «day ?», «away ;», «gleaner ;», «hand ;», «lot ;»); it is closed up here. «he 'll» and «He 'll» (stanza 3) are printed with a space before the apostrophe and are kept so. «The harvest will be past» (stanza 1, line 6) has no punctuation at the end of the line in the print. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. Lines 2, 4, 6 and 8 of each stanza are indented in the print. No meter is printed (the text is 7s & 6s. D., the meter of the tunes referred to).
