Speed thy servants, Saviour, speed them

  • No. 1059
  • Words Thomas Kelly.
  • 4 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

Speed thy servants, Saviour, speed them;Thou art Lord of winds and waves:They were bound, but thou hast freed them; Now they go to free the slaves;Be thou with them;'T is thine arm alone that saves.

2

Friends and home and all forsaking,Lord, they go at thy command; As their stay thy promise taking,While they traverse sea and land:O, be with them;Lead them safely by the hand.

3

Where no fruit appears to cheer them,And they seem to toil in vain,Then in mercy, Lord, draw near them,Then their sinking hopes sustain; Thus supported,Let their zeal revive again.

4

In the midst of oppositionLet them trust, O Lord, in thee; When success attends their mission,Let thy servants humble be;Never leave them,Till thy face in heaven they see.

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «1059» (large) at the top of the right column of p. 363, beside hymn 1058 (STANLEY), with the reference line «905, 295, 772.» in italic figures beside it (sing to the tune of hymn 905 ZION, 295 REGENT SQUARE or 772 PROMISE — 8s & 7s. 6l. / 8s, 7s & 4., the metre of these words: 8.7.8.7.4.7). No meter is printed. Four stanzas of six lines, numbered «1»–«4» without periods (written «1.»–«4.» here, as in the other deliveries of this book); lines 2, 4 and 6 indented, line 5 more; «Thomas Kelly.» in italics at the foot of the column. The first word «SPEED» is set in capitals and small capitals; written «Speed». Stanza 1, line 3 is too long for the column: the print breaks it as «They were bound, but thou hast freed» / «them ;» — joined here into one verse line. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «:» («them ;», «waves :», «command ;», «land :», «thee ;», «be ;»); it is closed up here, and the apostrophe of «'T is» is written straight. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
