⤢ Full screenChrist, who came my soul to save,Entered Jordan's yielding wave,Rose from out the crystal flood,Owned and sealed the Son of GodBy the Father's voice of love,By the heaven-descending dove;Saviour, Pattern, guide for me,I, like him, baptized would be.
In the garden, o'er his soulSorrow's whelming waves did roll; And on Calvary's cruel tree,Jesus bowed in death for me.I with him am crucified; All my hope is—he hath died;At his feet my place I take,Bear the cross for his dear sake.
In the new-made tomb he lay,Taking all its dread away;Burst he through its rock-bound door,Glorious now and evermore.I with Christ would buried beIn this rite required of me,—Rising from the mystic flood,Living hence anew to God.
About this hymn
As printed Words only. As printed: running head «THE CHURCH—BAPTISM.»; hymn number «1091» (large) at the head of the left column of p. 373, then in italics and brackets «[Tune, Martyn, No. 771.]» (sing to the tune MARTYN, hymn 771), then «7s.» in bold and a small capital «D.» at the right (= 7s, double: eight lines). Three numbered stanzas of eight lines, numbered «1»–«3» without a full stop (written «1.»–«3.» here), all lines flush, a blank line between the stanzas; «S. D. Phelps.» in italics, right-aligned, after stanza 3. The first word «CHRIST» is set in a capital and small capitals (written «Christ» here). In this exemplar faint broken pen or pencil strokes run down the left margin, between the stanza number and the text, beside lines 1–2 of stanzas 1 and 2; they are not part of the print. The print sets a thin space before «;» («dove ;», «roll ;», «crucified ;», «died ;», «away ;»); it is closed up here, and the curly apostrophes are written straight («Jordan's», «Father's», «o'er», «Sorrow's», «Calvary's»). Spelling («Saviour»), punctuation and capitals are the print's.
