⤢ Full screen'T was wondrous depth of heavenly loveThat brought our Saviour from aboveTo walk with men, a sinful race,To seek and save them by his grace.
He left his own majestic bliss,To sojourn in a world like this; Not to be honored as deserved,But he was here as one who served.
He was a true and constant friend; He loved his chosen to the end;And to impress a lesson meet,He washed his dear disciples' feet.
"Ye call me Lord, and that is true; Then do as I have done to you;Since 't is your privilege to know,You will be happy if you do."
About this hymn
As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «1101» (large) at the top of the right column of p. 375, beside stanza 2 of hymn 1099, with the italic reference line «538, 431, 624.» beside it (= sing to the tune of hymn 538, 431 or 624). Four stanzas of four lines, numbered «1»–«4» without a period (numbered «1.»–«4.» here as in the other deliveries of this book), lines set flush; «R. F. Cottrell.» in italics at the right after stanza 4. The first words «'T WAS» are set in capitals and small capitals, with a space after the «'T», and are written «'T was» here (as in HT_0172). Stanza 4 is in double quotation marks (opening before «Ye», closing after «do.»), written straight. The print sets a thin space before «;» («this ;», «friend ;», «end ;», «true ;», «you ;»); it is closed up here. Spelling («Saviour», «honored», «'t is» with its space), punctuation and capitals are the print's; apostrophes are written straight («disciples'»). No meter is printed (the text is L. M., 8.8.8.8, like the referenced tunes).
