⤢ Full screenFor Canaan I've started, and on I must go,'Till all the bright glories of Eden I know;I've made no reserve, and I'm sure I'll not lack,While onward I journey, and do not draw back;and do not draw back.
My soul is enkindled with rapture and love,I fain would ascend to my Jesus above; But nay, I must follow in his humble track,And prove my obedience by not drawing back.
Then on let us press; for Jesus is near; And strengthen each other with words of good cheer; With zeal ever buoyant and courage ne'er slack,Let 's be true to our King and never draw back.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «MISCELLANEOUS—OLD MELODIES.»; hymn number «1185» (large, left), tune name «I CANNOT GO BACK.» centred (capitals and small capitals) followed by the meter «11s.», «ARRANGED.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). In this copy a reader has written a name in ink across the header (not part of the print, not transcribed; see uncertainties.md). Stanza 1 is interlinear in ONE system, set in a condensed face and not spaced under the notes: «1. For» before a brace holding two lines — «Canaan I've started, and on I must go, 'Till all the bright glories of E - den I know; I've» and «made no reserve, and I'm sure I'll not lack, While onward I journey, and do not draw back; and» — and, right of the closing brace, «do not draw back.» It is given below in its four verse lines (11s) in the order sung, with the closing tag as a fifth line; «I've» (end of brace line 1) begins verse line 3 and «and» (end of brace line 2) begins the tag. Stanzas 2–3 are printed as text in two columns below the music, numbered «2» and «3» without a period (written «2.», «3.» here), four verse lines each; stanza 3 line 2 runs over into a turnover «cheer;», joined here. «Anon.» in italics after stanza 3. The print sets a thin space before «;» («know ;», «back ;», «above ;», «press ;», «near ;», «cheer ;»); it is closed up here. Apostrophes are written straight; the printed space in «Let 's» (stanza 3) is kept, as «we 'll» in the earlier deliveries. «'Till» is printed with an apostrophe and a capital. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. No reference line: the hymn has its own tune.
