⤢ Full screenLight after darkness,Gain after loss,Strength after weariness,Crown after cross;Sweet after bitter,Song after sigh,Home after wandering,Praise after cry.
Now comes the weeping,Then the glad reaping; Now comes the labor hard,Then the reward.
Sheaves after sowing,Sun after rain,Sight after mystery,Peace after pain;Joy after sorrow,Calm after blast,Rest after weariness,Sweet rest at last.
Near after distant,Gleam after gloom,Love after loneliness,Life after tomb;Dark though the pathwayLeading to this,After the agony,Rapture of bliss.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: hymn number «1211» (large, left), title «CROWN AFTER CROSS.» centred (condensed capitals with larger initials); under it the epigraph in one line, «"Who, for the joy that was set before him, endured the cross."—Heb. 12 : 2.»; «FRANCES R. HAVERGAL.» at the left and «E. S. LORENZ.» at the right (capitals and small capitals); no meter, no reference line and no running head are printed. The three stanzas are interlinear, «1.»–«3.» before the lines of system 1; the chorus, headed «CHORUS.», is printed once (its first line «Now comes the weeping,» on the second lyric row at the end of system 3, the rest in system 4) and is sung after every stanza. «From "Gates of Praise," by permission.» is printed under the music, above the page number «429». The print sets a thin space before «;» and «:» («cross ;», «pain ;», «tomb ;», «reap - ing ;», «12 : 2»); it is closed up here. Words divided under the notes are joined («aft-er», «dark-ness», «wear-i-ness» → «after», «darkness», «weariness»); each stanza is set in its eight short verse lines, each beginning with a capital as printed (the print runs three or four verse lines on one staff line). Stanza 1, verse 3: «Strength» is printed in a narrower, patched type; stanza 2, verse 1: «Sheavesaft» is printed without a space; chorus, verse 3: an ink blot covers the «o» of «la - bor» (see uncertainties.md). Spelling («labor»), punctuation and capitals are the print's.
