  • Words Anon.
  • Music W. A. Ogden.
  • Key B-flat major

1

Working, O Christ, with thee,Working with thee;Unworthy, sinful, weak,Tho' we may be;Our all to thee we give,For thee alone we live,And by thy grace achieve,Working with thee.

2

Along the city's waste,Working with thee; Our eager footsteps haste,Like thee to be;The poor we gather in,The outcasts raise from sin,And labor souls to win,Working with thee.

3

Saviour, we weary not,Working with thee;As hard as thine our lotCan never be;Our joy and comfort this,"Thy grace sufficient is;"This changes toil to bliss,Working with thee.

4

So let us labor on,Working with thee,Till earth to thee is won,From sin set free;Till men, from shore to shore,Receive thee, and adore,And join us evermore,Working with thee.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: hymn number «1261» (large, left), title «WORKING, O CHRIST, WITH THEE.» centred (condensed capitals with larger initials); under it the epigraph in one line across the page, «"We then, as workers together with him, beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain."—2 Cor. 6 : 1.» (old-style figures); on the next line «ANON.» at the left (words) and «W. A. OGDEN.» at the right (music), capitals and small capitals. No meter, no tune name other than the title, no reference line, no «CHORUS.». The hymn begins in the lower half of printed p. 478 (two systems) and ends on p. 479 (one system under the running title «WORKING, O CHRIST, WITH THEE.—Concluded.»). All four stanzas are interlinear, numbered «1.»–«4.» in system 1, four lines between the staves of each system. Under the music of p. 478, centred: «From "Gathered Jewels," by permission.» The stanzas are set here in their eight verse lines, each beginning with a capital as printed (the print runs them on under the staves); in stanza 4 «and adore,» stands inside the sixth line. Words divided under the notes are joined («Work-ing», «Un - wor-thy», «sin - ful», «a- | lone», «a - chieve», «A - long», «cit - y's», «ea - ger», «foot-steps», «gath - er», «out - casts», «la - bor», «Sav - iour», «wea - ry», «nev - er», «com - fort», «suf- | fi - cient», «chang - es», «Re - ceive», «a - dore», «ev - er - more»); «a- | lone» and «suf- | fi - cient» are broken by the page turn. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «:» («thee ;», «be ;», «free ;», «is ;"», «6 : 1»); it is closed up here; curly quotes and apostrophes are written straight. Spelling and punctuation are the print's («Tho'», «labor», «Saviour»; no stop after «lot»; a comma after the second line of stanza 4, a semicolon in stanzas 1–3). The pen and pencil marks of the scanned copy beside the title and after «ANON.» are not printed matter and are not given.
