⤢ Full screenOn the shore (on the shore) beyond the sea,Where the fields (where the fields) are bright and fair,There's a call (there's a call), a plaintive plea,I must hast-(I must hast-)en to be there.
Let me go, I cannot stay,'T is the Master calling me;Let me go, I must obey;Native land, farewell to thee (farewell to thee).
Hark! I hear (Hark! I hear) the Master say,"Up, ye reap-(up, ye reap-)ers! why so slow?"To the vine-(to the vine-)yard, far away,Earthly kin-(earthly kin-)dred, let me go.
Just beyond (just beyond) the rolling tide,The uplift-(the uplift-)ed hand I see;Lo l the gates (lo! the gates) are open wide,And the lost (and the lost) are calling me.
Father, moth-(father, moth-)er, darling child,I must bid (I must bid) you all adieu;Far across (far across) the waters wild,There's a work (there's a work) for me to do.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: hymn number «1264» (large, left), title «MISSIONARY'S FAREWELL.» centred (condensed capitals and small capitals, «Missionary's Farewell.»); on the next line «I. B.» at the left (words), the epigraph «"Come over into Macedonia and help us."—Acts 16 : 9.» in the centre (old-style figures) and «REV. I. BALTZELL.» at the right (music, capitals and small capitals). No meter, no tune name other than the title, no reference line, no running head. All four stanzas are interlinear, numbered «1.»–«4.», between the staves of systems 1–2. Inside every stanza line the three syllables just sung are printed again in small condensed type and in parentheses — the ECHO of tenor and bass, who enter after a rest while soprano and alto hold their note; the echo is given here inside the line, exactly where the print has it. Where the echo falls inside a word the print breaks the word with a hyphen before the parenthesis and resumes it after («hast-( I must hast-) en», «reap-( up, ye reap-)ers!», «vine-( to the vine-) yard,», «kin-(earthly kin-) dred,», «up - lift-(the up - lift-)ed», «moth-(father,moth-) er,»); here the two halves are closed up around the parentheses. In stanza 1 the comma of «call,» stands after the echo: «call (there's a call), a plaintive plea,». Each printed line of words carries two verse lines; they are given here one verse line per line. «CHORUS.» (bold capitals) stands over system 3; the chorus words are printed once, under systems 3–5, in two lines: the upper line is the soprano's (with leader dots and hyphens under her held notes); the lower line, shifted under it, is sung by alto, tenor and bass under those held notes — it is given below after the chorus. The last echo of the chorus, «(fare-well to thee).», is in the small type and parentheses of the stanza echoes; the final period stands after the parenthesis. Stanza 3, third verse line: the print (this scan) has «Lo l the gates» — a plain stroke «l» where the echo of the same line has «lo!» — kept as printed. «'T is» (upper chorus line) is set with a space, «'Tis» (lower chorus line) without. Under the music, centred: «By permission.»; at the left the sheet signature «31». The print sets a thin space before «!», «?», «;» and «:» («Hark ! I hear», «slow ?"», «see ;», «16 : 9»); it is closed up here; curly quotes and apostrophes are written straight. Spelling and punctuation are the print's.
