⤢ Full screenThe great Physician now is near,The sympathizing Jesus; He speaks the drooping heart to cheer,O hear the voice of Jesus.
All glory to the dying Lamb!I now believe in Jesus;I love the blessed Saviour's name,I love the name of Jesus.
His name dispels my guilt and fear;No other name but Jesus;O how my soul delights to hearThe precious name of Jesus!
And when he comes to bring the crown,—The crown of life and glory; Then by his side we will sit down,And tell redemption's story.
Sweetest note in seraph song,Sweetest name on mortal tongue,Sweetest carol ever sung,—Jesus, blessed Jesus!
About this hymn
As printed As printed: under hymn 1280 on PDF 497 (printed 496), the hymn number «1281» (large, left) and the title «THE GREAT PHYSICIAN.» centred (condensed capitals and small capitals); under it, in one line of small roman type, the epigraph «"Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases."—Ps. 103 : 3.» (old-style figures); on the next line «WILLIAM HUNTER.» at the left (words) and «ARR. BY J. H. STOCKTON.» at the right (music), in capitals and small capitals. No meter, tune name, tempo word, reference line or copyright line is printed. The four stanzas are interlinear, numbered «1.»-«4.», between the staves of the two systems of PDF 497. The hymn ends on the top system of PDF 498 (printed 497), headed «THE GREAT PHYSICIAN.—Concluded.» and «CHORUS.»: two lines of words joined by braces under the repeated first two bars («Sweet-est note in seraph song,» / «Sweet-est name on mortal tongue,», the 1st and 2nd time), then one line «Sweetest car-ol ev-er sung,—Jesus, blessed Je-sus!». Each stanza is given here in its four verse lines; each printed line of words under a system holds two verse lines (a new verse line is shown by its capital: «…now is near, The sym-pa-thiz-ing Je-sus;», «…bring the crown,—The crown of life and glo-ry;»). The chorus is given in its four verse lines; the print's «sung,—Jesus,» is divided after the dash. The words divided under the notes are joined here; the divisions are in `lyrics_syllables.txt` («seraph», «mortal», «Sweetest» (3rd line), «Jesus,», «blessed» are printed solid under two notes; «tongue,» is set in a condensed fount). The print sets a thin space before «; ! ?»; it is closed up here; curly quotes and apostrophes are written straight. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's, including «Saviour's», «redemption's», the lower-case «he»/«his», «O how my soul…» and «O hear the voice…» (no comma after «O»), «crown,—The crown» and «sung,—».
