⤢ Full screenThere's room for you to anchorWithin the port of rest,Where tempests all are over,And calms no more molest; How sweet to weary voyagers,This precious promise giv'n:There's room for you to anchorSafe in heav'n.
There's room (for you), there's room (for you); There's room (for you), there's room (for you). There's room for you to anchorSafe in heav'n.
There's room for you to anchor; The ship is waiting now,—The ship of God's preparing,O ask not Why nor How.His boundless love and mercyNo tongue can ever tell,—If you but trust his promise,All is well.
The same dear friends shall meet usThat we have loved below; The same sweet voices greet usAs in the long ago. Then hush! ye murm'ring waters,Ye tempests, cease to blow!I almost hear the musicSoft and low.
O heaving, swelling billows,Bear onward to my home!Beyond these dreary headlandsI see its shining dome. There, there my fainting spiritNo more for rest shall sigh;'Tis there I hope to anchorBy and by.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: hymn number «1286» (large, left), title «THERE'S ROOM FOR YOU TO ANCHOR.» centred (capitals and small capitals, «There's Room for You to Anchor.»); under it the epigraph in two lines of small type, the second centred: «"In my Father's house are many mansions : if it were not so I would have told you ; I go to prepare a place / for you."—John 14 : 2.» (old-style figures). On the next line «F. E. B.» at the left (words), «(DUET, OR QUARTETTE.)» in the centre (bold capitals in parentheses — a performance note) and «F. E. BELDEN.» at the right (music, capitals and small capitals). «Tenderly.» (italic) stands over the first bar. No meter, no tune name other than the title, no reference line, no running head. All four stanzas are interlinear, numbered «1.»–«4.», between the staves of systems 1–3; the verse lines run on across the systems and are given here one verse line per line (joined across system breaks: «all are / o-ver,», «pre- / par-ing,», «voi-ces / greet us», «drear-y / headlands», «This / pre-cious», «No / tongue», «Ye / tempests,», «No / more»). «REFRAIN.» (bold capitals) stands over system 4; the refrain words are printed once, under systems 4–5, in one line for all voices: the words in parentheses «(for you)» are an echo sung by two voices while the other two hold «room». Under the music, centred: «Copyrighted 1886 by F. E. Belden.» (the last figure of the year is blotted; read 6 — see uncertainties.md). The exclamation mark of «home!» (stanza 4) is a damaged sort. The print sets a thin space before «:», «;» and «!» («mansions :», «you ;», «hush !», «low ;», «14 : 2»); it is closed up here; curly quotes and apostrophes are written straight. Spelling and punctuation are the print's.
