⤢ Full screenI gave my life for thee,My precious blood I shed,That thou might'st ransomed be,And quickened from the dead;I gave, I gave my life for thee,What hast thou given for me?I gave, I gave my life for thee,What hast thou giv'n for me?
My Father's house of light,My glory-circled throne,I left for earthly night,For wand'rings sad and lone;I left, I left it all for thee,Hast thou left aught for me?I left, I left it all for thee,Hast thou left ought for me?
I suffered much for thee,More than thy tongue can tell,Of bit'rest agony,To rescue thee from hell;I've borne, I've borne it all for thee,What hast thou borne for me?I've borne, I've borne it all for thee,What hast thou borne for me?
About this hymn
As printed As printed: no running head on p. 506 (the page opens with this hymn); hymn number «1295» (large, left), title «What Hast Thou Done for Me?» centred (condensed bold capitals and small capitals: «W», «H», «T», «D», «M» full capitals; final question mark); under it, on one line, the epigraph «"This is a faithful saying, * * that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners."—1 Tim. 1 : 15.» (roman, old-style figures, the two asterisks marking the omission); on the next line «MISS F. R. HAVERGAL.» at the left (words) and «J. E. WHITE, by per,» at the right (music; the final stop is comma-shaped on the scan and is kept as printed). No meter, no tune name other than the title, no tempo word and no reference line are printed. The three stanzas are interlinear, numbered «1.» «2.» «3.» before the first syllable of system 1, three lines of words between the staves of all three systems; there is no separate chorus — the closing couplets («I gave, I gave my life for thee, What hast thou given for me?» twice) are part of each stanza, with their own words in stanzas 2 and 3. Each printed line of words follows the staff, not the verse (system 1 breaks after «be, / night, / -ny,», system 2 after «What / Hast / What»); the stanzas are given here in their eight verse lines. The words divided under the notes are joined here («quick - ened», «glo - ry - cir - cled», «earth - ly», «bit - 'rest», «ag - o - ny», «res - cue» → «quickened», «glory-circled», «earthly», «bit'rest», «agony», «rescue»); the divisions are in `lyrics_syllables.txt`. «glo - ry - cir - cled» is given as «glory-circled» (the compound keeps one hyphen; the print cannot show which of its hyphens is the word's own). The print sets a thin space before «;» and «?» («dead ;», «me ?») and around the colon of the reference («1 : 15»); it is closed up here; the curly quotation marks and apostrophes are written straight («might'st», «wand'rings», «bit'rest», «I've», «giv'n»). Spelling, capitals and punctuation are the print's, including «given» (system 3, first line) beside «giv'n» (its end) in stanza 1, and «aught» beside «ought» in stanza 2 (both old spellings of the same word; see `uncertainties.md`).
