About this hymn

As printed As printed: hymn number «1306» (large, left), title «GO AND INQUIRE.» centred (condensed capitals with larger initials, «Go and Inquire.»); under it, in one line, «W. A. O.» at the left (the words), the epigraph «"Search the scriptures, for in them ye think ye have eternal life."—John 5 : 39.» in the middle (old-style figures; «scriptures» lower-case) and «W. A. OGDEN.» at the right (the music), capitals and small capitals. No meter, no tune name other than the title, no reference line, no running head. The three stanzas are interlinear, three lines between the staves of systems 1–3, numbered «1.»–«3.» in system 1; each stanza is four verse lines, given here one verse line per line (the staff breaks fall after «Seek-ing the / to / the» and after «sto-ry,—»). The first verse line is the same in all three stanzas, and the fourth («What does the blessed Bible say?») too. «CHORUS.» (bold capitals) stands over the treble in system 3, after «say?»; the chorus words are printed once, in two lines: the upper line, sung by the soprano in long notes, with dots or dashes where a syllable is held («Go and inquire, . . . the King com- / mandeth, Ask of the Lord . . . for me and thee; Knock at the / o - - - pen door of mercy Where there is par - - - don full and free.»), and the lower line, sung at the same time by alto, tenor and bass in eighth notes, an echo of the upper line in four short phrases. The chorus is given here once, after stanza 1: first the soprano's line as four verse lines, then the four phrases of the lower voices. The print sets «Goand» closed up and «the King com-» in a smaller condensed type at the end of system 3; «commandeth» is broken «com- / mandeth,» across the systems and joined here; the dots and dashes of the held syllables are not words and are left out; «o - - - pen» and «par - - - don» are «open» and «pardon». The print sets a thin space before «?» and «;» («say ?», «thee ;»); it is closed up here; apostrophes are written straight. Under the music, centred: «By permission.» (its «B» damaged in the scan). Spelling and punctuation are the print's («Saviour», «heav'nly», «wand'rers», the comma-dashes «story,—», «city,—», «Jesus,—»).
