⤢ Full screenWe love to tell the story;Yet there is more to do;For faith brings no salvationWithout obedience too.
It is a precious story,And we believe it true; But who of us can answerThat this alone will do?
Let Faith repeat the story,Let Works proclaim it true; For they alone are blessedWho God's commandments do.
Then tell the old, old story,And heed its precepts, too;'T is well to tell the story,Yet there is more to do.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: hymn number «1312» (large, left), title «More to Do.» centred (condensed capitals and small capitals), under the music of hymn 1311 on p. 522; on the next line «F. E. B.» at the left (words), the epigraph «"Know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead."—James 2 : 20.» in the middle (old-style figures) and «F. E. BELDEN.» at the right (music), capitals and small capitals. No meter, no tune name other than the title, no reference line. The hymn fills the two lower systems of p. 522 and the first system of p. 523, which is headed «MORE TO DO.—Concluded.»; under the music of p. 522, centred: «Copyrighted 1886 by F. E. Belden.». All three stanzas are interlinear, numbered «1.»–«3.», between the staves of the two systems of p. 522 (up to «CHORUS.»); in stanza 3 «Faith» and «Works» are printed in italics (marked here with asterisks). «CHORUS.» (bold capitals) stands over the end of system 2 of p. 522; the chorus words are printed once, in one line under the soprano; a second, shifted line gives the words of the tenor and bass, who rest on the first beat and enter one beat later: «Then tell the» (p. 522, under «the old, old») and «And heed it,» (p. 523, under «its precepts,»); after these entries they sing with the upper line. The chorus is given here once, after stanza 3, as printed; the tenor-bass words are not repeated in its text. Each printed line of words carries four verse lines; they are given here one verse line per line. The words divided under the notes are joined here («sto-ry», «prec-ious», «re-peat», «sal-va-tion», «With-out», «o-be-dience», «an-swer», «a-lone», «bles-sed»), and «pre-cepts» in the chorus — the divisions are in `lyrics_syllables.txt`. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «?» («sto - ry ;», «do ;», «do ?», «too ;»); it is closed up here; the curly apostrophes are written straight («God's», «'T is»). Spelling («'T is» as two words, «blessed» in two syllables «bles - sed»), capitals and punctuation are the print's.
