⤢ Full screenCheer up, weary heart, with joy you may runThe race that before you appears;Of the righteous 'tis said, They shall shine as the sunIn the realm of eternal years.
They shall shine as the sun,All they who their Master obey; They shall shine as the sun,With Jesus thro' endless day.
Stand firm, fainting heart, be brave in the right,The helmet of faith you should wear;By the sword of his word and the pow'r of his might,God will help you the cross to bear.
Sweet promise of God! it rings in my earLike music I cannot describe;I may shine as the sun if I only draw nearTo the Lamb who on Calv'ry died.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: hymn number «1363» (large, left), title «THEY SHALL SHINE AS THE SUN.» centred (condensed capitals and small capitals, «They Shall Shine as the Sun.»); under it, centred, the epigraph «"Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father."—Matt. 13 : 43.» (old-style figures); on the next line «W. T. G.» at the left (the words) and «W. T. GIFFE.» at the right (the music). No meter, no tune name other than the title, no reference line. All three stanzas are interlinear, numbered «1.»–«3.», between the staves of systems 1–2 (the figure «3.» is damaged and looks like «8.»); each printed line carries two verse lines, given here one verse line per line. «CHORUS.» (bold capitals) stands over system 3. The chorus has two lines of words in each of systems 3 and 4: the upper line, sung by the soprano in long notes, with three dots where «shine» is held («They shall shine . . . as the sun, All they who their Mas-ter o-bey;» and «They shall shine . . . as the sun, With Je-sus thro' end-less day.»), and the lower line, sung at the same time by alto, tenor and bass in quarters and eighths («They shall shine as the sun When their work is done,», printed in both systems), which ends where the upper line reaches «All» / «With»; from there all voices sing the upper line. The chorus is given here once, after stanza 1: the soprano's line, then the line of the lower voices. «fainting» and «Calv'ry» are printed unbroken under two notes; «prom-ise» and «right-eous» have a short closed-up syllable hyphen. Under the music, centred: «Copyrighted 1881 by J. E. White.» and the page number «573». The print sets a thin space before «;» («appears ;», «wear ;», «describe ;», «obey ;»); it is closed up here; curly quotes and apostrophes are written straight. Spelling and punctuation are the print's («'tis», «pow'r», «Calv'ry», «thro'», «God! it»).
