⤢ Full screenWe are joyously voyaging over the main,Bound for the evergreen shore,Whose inhabitants never of sickness complain,And never see death any more.
Then let the hurricane roar,It will the sooner be o'er;We will weather the blast, and we'll land at lastSafe on the evergreen shore.
We have nothing to fear from the wind and the wave,Under our Saviour's command; And our hearts in the midst of the dangers are brave; For Jesus will bring us to land.
Both the winds and the waves our Commander controls;Nothing can baffle his skill:And his voice when the thundering hurricane rolls,Can make the loud tempest be still.
In the thick murky night, when the stars and the moon,Send not a glimmering ray,Then the light of His countenance, brighter than noon,Will drive all our terror away.
Let the high-heaving billows and mountainous wave,Fearfully overhead break; There is One by our side that can comfort and save,There is One who will never forsake.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: hymn number «1365» (large, left), title «THE EVERGREEN SHORE.» centred (condensed capitals and small capitals, «The Evergreen Shore.»); under it, centred, the epigraph «"Forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things that are before."—Phil. 3 : 13» (old-style figures, no period after «13»; an ink blot over the «th» of the first «those»); on the next line, at the right only, «WILLIAM B. BRADBURY.» (the music, capitals and small capitals) — no author of the words is printed. No meter, no tune name other than the title, no reference line. All five stanzas are interlinear, numbered «1.»–«5.», between the staves of systems 1–2; each printed line of words carries two verse lines, given here one verse line per line. «CHORUS.» (bold capitals) stands over system 3; the chorus words are printed once, under systems 3–4. Under «roar,» of the chorus a second line prints «roar» followed by leader dots to «We will»: the tenor's echo (it holds «roar» while the other voices sing «It will the sooner be o'er;»). No stanza is printed as text under the music. Stanza 5 prints «high - heav-ing» (the compound high-heaving), «o - verhead» and, in its last verse line, crams «There is One who will never forsake.» (one syllable more than the other stanzas). A thin stroke runs through «the stars» in stanza 4 (a mark on this exemplar; the words are legible). Under the music, centred: «From "The Golden Chain." by per. Biglow & Main.»; folio «575». The print sets a thin space before «;» and «:» («command ;», «skill :», «Phil. 3 : 13»); it is closed up here; curly quotes and apostrophes are written straight. Spelling and punctuation are the print's.
