About this hymn
As printed As printed (PDF 586, printed p. 585, systems 2–5; system 1 is the end of hymn 1376): hymn number «1377» (large, left) and the title «"CAST THY BURDEN ON THE LORD."» centred, in quotation marks (condensed capitals and small capitals); under it, centred, the epigraph in small type «"Cast thy burden upon the Lord, aud he shall sustain thee."—Ps. 55 : 22.» — «aud» is the print's, a turned «n» for «and» (printer's slip, kept as printed; the proposed correction «and» is in `truth.json`); on the next line at the right «WM. B. BRADBURY.» (capitals and small capitals); no author of the words, no meter, no tune name, no copyright line; folio «585». An anthem in prose: no stanza numbers, no refrain. The words run as one line between the staves; in system 2 a second line under it, «Cast thy burden on the Lord,» (with a wide gap after «Cast»), belongs to the tenor and bass, who enter while the alto sings the main line; it is given after the main text. Over the last bar, in italics, «Repeat pp»: the last system («He will sustain thee, … on the Lord.», between the repeat signs) is sung twice, the second time pianissimo — the repeat is not written out below. Lines here follow the musical phrases (the print runs the prose across the systems; the join across systems 2–3 is «Cast thy / bur - den»). The words divided under the notes are joined («bur-den», «sus-tain», «com-fort» → «burden», «sustain», «comfort»); «burden», «sustain», «comfort» and «strengthen» are printed unbroken in several places; the divisions as printed are in `lyrics_syllables.txt`. The thin space before «;» and «:» («thee ;», «thee :», «55 : 22») is closed up; quotation marks are written straight. Spelling and punctuation are the print's.
