⤢ Full screenRaise the standard high,Sound the gath'ring cry,Let the evil kingdom fall; With a purpose true,And a will to do,Sons of freedom, come ye all.
(upper line — first and second tenor)Raise the temp'rance standard high,Shout the mighty battle cry;Let the evil kingdom fall,Sons of freedom, come ye all.
(lower line — baritone and bass)Raise the temp'rance standard high, on high,Shout the mighty temp'rance battle cry;Let the evil kingdom fall,Sons of freedom, come ye all.
Over sea and land,With an iron hand,Has the monarch held his sway; But his rule shall cease,And the reign of peaceUsher in the golden day.
Let the right prevail,Let the evil failIn the conflict fierce and long,Till the land is free,And the victoryCrowns the temp'rance army strong.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: hymn number «1389» (large, left), title «RAISE THE STANDARD HIGH.» centred (condensed capitals with larger initials); under it the epigraph on one centred line, «"Lift up a standard for the people."—Isa. 62: 10.»; then «F. E. BELDEN.» at the left (words), «(MALE QUARTETTE.)» in the centre and «D. S. HAKES.» at the right (music); no meter, no reference line, no running head. The three stanzas are interlinear, three lines between the staves of systems 1–2, numbered «1.»–«3.» in system 1; the CHORUS (marked «CHORUS.») has TWO lines between the staves of systems 3–4, set out of phase: the upper line is sung by the tenors (upper staff), the lower line, with the echo «on high,» and «temp'rance battle cry;», by the baritone and bass (lower staff). The chorus is sung after each stanza. The verse lines are given here as lines of the poem (six per stanza, four in each chorus line). Syllable hyphens are joined («stand-ard», «gath-'ring» as «gath'ring», «e - vil», «king-dom», «O - ver», «i - ron», «mon-arch», «pre-vail», «con - flict», «pur-pose», «Ush - er», «gold-en», «vic - to - ry», «bat - tle»; «might-y» as «mighty» — the hyphen is read as the syllable division). The print sets a thin space before some «;» («fall ;», «sway ;», «cry ;»); it is closed up here; apostrophes are written straight («gath'ring», «temp'rance»). Words run together for want of room («Raise thetemp'rancestand», «hisruleshallcease», «Andthe», «Crownsthetemp'ranceamrystrong», «con - flictfierceandlong») are written with their word spaces. Under the music: «Copyrighted 1880 by J. E. White.» (centred) and the page number «597».
