About this hymn
As printed As printed: hymn number «1396» (large, left), title «GALILEE, SWEET GALILEE.» centred (condensed display capitals and small capitals; the final mark is a point); under it the epigraph «"When the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore; but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus."—John 21 : 4.» (old-style figures, the reference on a second line); «MRS. C. L. SCHACKLOCK.» (the words) at the left and «E. H. BAILEY.» (the music) at the right, both in capitals and small capitals. No meter, no tune name other than the title, no reference line, no running head. All three stanzas are interlinear, numbered «1.»–«3.», between the staves of systems 1–4 of printed p. 604, one verse line per system. After each half of the first three verse lines the four syllables just sung are printed again in small condensed type and in parentheses — the ECHO of alto, tenor and bass, who enter after a rest while the soprano holds her note; the echo is given here inside the line, exactly where the print has it (no punctuation inside the parentheses: «thee! (at thought of thee)», «forevermore; (forevermore)»). In stanza 2 the word «waves» of the main line is squeezed into the condensed type of the echoes; in the echoes the capital O prints like a zero («(0 Gal-i-lee)») and the capital I like an «l» («(ln mor-tal guise)»). «CHORUS.» (bold capitals) stands over the middle of system 4; the chorus is printed once and ends on the first system of printed p. 605, headed «GALILEE.—Concluded.». Under its first two verse lines the print has two lines of words: the upper line (soprano and alto) with leader dots under the held chords — «O Gal-i-lee, . . . . sweet Gal-i-lee, . . . . Thy bless-ed name . . . will sa-cred be . . . .» — and, shifted under it, the lower line of tenor and bass, given below after the chorus. Under the music of p. 604, centred: «From "Carols of Joy," by permission Frank M. Davis.», then the folio «604». The print sets a thin space before «!», «;» and «:» («thee !», «more ;», «21 : 4»); it is closed up here; curly quotes and apostrophes are written straight. Words divided by syllable under the notes are joined («Gal-i-lee», «mem-'ries», «for-ev-er-more», «hal-low'd», «ev-'ry», «a-dore»). Spelling («Saviour», «Thro'», «mem'ries», «hallow'd», «ev'ry», «An homage») and punctuation are the print's.
