Mournfully, tenderly, bear on the dead,

  • No. 1413
  • Tune THE BURIAL OF MRS. JUDSON.
  • Words H. S. Washburn.
  • Music L. Heath.
  • Key A-flat major
  • Singing key A♭ major
  • Time 4/4
  • 5 stanzas
1

Mournfully, tenderly, bear on the dead,Where the warrior has lain, let the Christian be laid;No place more befitting—O Rock of the sea!Never such treasure was hidden in thee.

2

Mournfully, tenderly, solemn and slow,Tears are bedewing the path as we go;Kindred and strangers are mourners to-day,Gently, so gently, O! bear her away.

3

Mournfully, tenderly, gaze on that brow,Beautiful is it in quietude now:One look! and then settle the loved to her rest,The ocean beneath her, the turf on her breast.

4

So have ye buried her—up! and depart,To life and to duty with undismayed heart:Fear not—for the love of the stranger will keep,The casket that lies in the Rock of the deep.

5

Peace to thy bosom, thou servant of God!The vale thou art treading, before, thou hast trod:Precious dust thou hast laid by the Hopia tree,And treasure as precious in the Rock of the sea!

About this hymn

As printed As printed: hymn number «1413» (large, left), title «THE BURIAL OF MRS. JUDSON.» centred (condensed capitals with larger initials), «L. HEATH.» at the right (capitals and small capitals), and under the title, in italics, «(Published by request.)». No meter, no reference line, no running head. Stanza 1 is interlinear, one line per system: «1. Mourn - ful - ly, ten - der - ly, bear on the dead, Where the war-rior has lain, let the Christian be laid ;» / «No place more be - fit - ting—O Rock of the sea ! Nev - er such treasure was hid - den in thee.» / and, under the short third system, line 4 again: «Never such treasure was hidden in thee.» (see `lyrics_syllables.txt`). The verse lines are given here as lines of the poem; syllable hyphens are joined. Stanzas 2-5 are printed as text — 3 and 4 to the right of the third system, 2 at the bottom left, 5 at the bottom right — then «H. S. Washburn.» in italics (a hand-drawn wavy ink stroke under the name in this exemplar). Their numbers are printed without a full stop («2 Mournfully, …») and are numbered «2.» … here. The print sets a thin space before «;», «:» and «!»; it is closed up here. Stanza 5 line 2 is set very tightly («The vale thou art treading,» with hair spaces); it is written with ordinary word spaces. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's («to-day», «O!», «her—up!», «Hopia»: the hopea tree under which Ann Judson was buried, kept as printed).
