Two staves (treble with two voices, almost always two heads on one stem, and the words printed under
it; bass); C minor (three flats), 3/4. The first strain (to «o'er :») ends with a repeat and is sung
twice — the two braced lines under it are lines 1–2 and 3–4 of the stanza. The last line of the
stanza is sung twice at the end of the music. Below the music on p. 15 the book prints a scripture
line and then stanzas 1 and 2 in full.
“ The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.” Jer. vii. 20.
1
When the harvest is past, and the summer is gone;
And warnings and prayers shall be o'er;
When the beams cease to break of the sweet Sabbath morn
And Jesus invites thee no more;
When the rich gales of mercy no longer shall blow,
The gospel no message declare;
Sinner, how can'st thou bear the deep wailings of woe;
How suffer the night of despair.
2
When the holy have gone to the regions of peace,
Those heavenly mansions to prove ;
When their harmony wakes in the fulness of bliss,
Their song to the Saviour they love;
Say, O Sinner, that livest at rest and secure,
Who fearest no trouble to come,
Can thy spirit the swellings of sorrow endure
Or bear the impenitent's doom!
