Words
⤢ Full screenLord, we come before thee now,
At thy feet we humbly bow;
O do not our suit disdain!
Shall we seek thee, Lord, in vain?
Lord, on thee our souls depend;
In compassion now descend,
Fiil our hearts with thy rich grace,
Tune our lips to sing thy praise.
Send some message from thy word
That may joy and peace afford;
Let thy Spirit now impart
Full salvation to each heart,
Comfort those who weep and mourn,
Let the time of joy return;
Those that are cast down lift up,
Make them strong in faith and hope.
Grant that all may seek, and find
Thee a God supremely kind;
Heal the sick, the captive free;
Let us all rejoice in thee.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «WORSHIP—OPENING HYMNS.»; hymn number «15» (large, left), tune name «HENDON. 7s.» centred over the music, «C. H. A. MALAN.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is set between the staves, one text line per system, with «1.» before «Lord,»; the tune sings the last line of the stanza twice («Shall we seek thee, Lord, in vain? Shall we seek thee, Lord, in vain?»), the second time to a different melody — the stanza below gives the line once, as poetry. Stanzas 2–5 are printed as text in the left column below the music, under the italic reference line «240, 272, 457.» (= the words may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 240, 272 or 457); «William Hammond.» in italics after stanza 5. The first word of stanza 1 is set in the interlinear text only (no small capitals). Lines 2–4 of each printed stanza are not indented. The printer's hair space before «;» and «!» (bow ;, depend ;, dis-dain !, vain ?) is closed up here and kept in `lyrics_syllables.txt`. «Fiil» in stanza 2, line 3, is printed so (a slip for «Fill») and kept as printed — see `uncertainties.md`.
