Worship — Attributes and Providence of God

God is our refuge and defense

  • No. 57
  • Words James Montgomery.
  • 3 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

God is our refuge and defense,
In trouble our unfailing aid;
Secure in his omnipotence,
What foe can make our souls afraid?

2

Yea, though the earth's foundations rock,
And mountains down the gulf be hurled,
His people smile amid the shock;
They look beyond this transient world.

3

Built by the word of his command,
Ten thousand worlds on nothing rest;
All living things are in his hand,
And he who trusts his word is blest.

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «57», reference line «301, 336, 104.» in italics (sing to the tune of hymn 301, 336 or 104); three numbered stanzas in the right column of p. 22 below hymn 56, «James Montgomery.» in italics at the foot of the column. The first word «GOD» is set in capitals and small capitals. «hurled,» (stanza 2, line 2) is carried over to a line of its own by the column width; it is joined here. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «?» («aid ;», «afraid ?», «shock ;», «rest ;»); it is closed up here. Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's («defense», «blest»). No meter is printed (the text is L. M., 8.8.8.8).
