⤢ Full screenMy blest Redeemer and my Lord.
I read my duty in thy word;
But in thy life the law appears,
Drawn out in living characters.
What truth and love thy bosom fill!
What zeal to do thy Father's will!
Such zeal, and truth, and love divine,
I would transcribe, and make them mine.
Cold mountains and the midnight air
Witnessed the fervor of thy prayer;
The desert thy temptations knew,
Thy conflict, and thy victory too.
Be thou my pattern; make me bear
More of thy gracious image here;
Then God, the Judge, shall own my name
Among the followers of the Lamb.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «CHRIST—LIFE AND CHARACTER.» (a new section begins on this page); hymn number «301» (large), tune name «ROCKINGHAM. L. M.» centred over the music (capitals and small capitals), «LOWELL MASON.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «My» (see `lyrics_syllables.txt`); the first line ends «Lord.» with a full stop in this print (a round stop at 4×–5×, not the tailed comma of «appears,»). Stanzas 2–4 are printed as text in the left column below the music, under the reference line «223, 58, 101.» in italics (= may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 223, 58 or 101). «Isaac Watts.» in italics after stanza 4. The print sets a thin space before «!» and «;» («fill !», «will !», «prayer ;», «pattern ;», «here ;»); it is closed up here. The printer's curly apostrophe is written straight («Father's»). The stanza numbers of the text column are printed without a period («2», «3», «4»); they are written «2.» … here, like the interlinear «1.», as in the other deliveries of this book. The «o» of «of» in stanza 3 line 2 is a slightly larger wrong-fount letter; it is the word «of». Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
