⤢ Full screenLord, how mysterious are thy ways!
How blind are we, how mean our praise!
Thy steps no mortal eyes explore;
'Tis ours to wonder and adore.
I do not ask that I may see
What in the future waits for me;
Let righteousness attend my days,
And thine shall be the humble praise.
Are darkness and distress my share?
Give me to trust thy guardian care;
Enough for me, if love divine
At length through every cloud shall shine.
Yet this my soul desires to know,
Be this my only wish below,—
That Christ is mine!—this great request,
Grant, bounteous God, and I am blest.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: hymn number «64», tune name «HEBRON. L. M.» centred over the music, «LOWELL MASON.» at the right (capitals and small capitals); running head «WORSHIP—ATTRIBUTES AND PROVIDENCE OF GOD.». Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, two verse lines per system, with «1.» before «Lord,»; the print sets it «mys - te - rious», «mor - tal», «won - der», «a - dore.», «explore;» as one word under two notes and «thy ways!» very tight. Stanzas 2–4 are printed as text in the left column below the music, under the reference line «58, 23, 51.» in italics (= may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 58, 23 or 51); «Anne Steele.» in italics after stanza 4. The print sets a thin space before «!», «;» and «?» («ways !», «praise !», «me ;», «share ?», «care ;», «mine !»); it is closed up here. The apostrophe of «'Tis» is printed curly; it is written straight. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's; the lines of stanzas 2–4 are set flush (no indentation).
