Worship — Attributes and Providence of God

Praise ye the Lord!—'t is good to raise

  • No. 63
  • Words Isaac Watts.
  • 6 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

Praise ye the Lord!—'t is good to raise
Our hearts and voices in his praise;
His nature and his works invite
To make this duty our delight.

2

The Lord builds up Jerusalem,
And gathers nations to his name;
His mercy melts the stubborn soul,
And makes the broken spirit whole.

3

He formed the stars,—those heavenly flames,—
He counts their numbers, calls their names:
His wisdom's vast, and knows no bound,—
A deep, where all our thoughts are drowned.

4

Great is our Lord, and great his might,
And all his glories infinite;
He crowns the meek, rewards the just,
And treads the wicked to the dust.

5

But saints are lovely in his sight;
He views his children with delight;
He sees their hope, he knows their fear,
And looks, and loves his image there.

6

Proclaim him King, pronounce him blest:
He's your defense, your joy, your rest:
When terrors rise and nations faint,
God is the strength of every saint.

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «63», reference line «3, 19, 58.» in italics (sing to the tune of hymn 3, 19 or 58), six numbered stanzas in the right column of p. 24 below hymn 62, «Isaac Watts.» in italics at the end. The first word «PRAISE» is set in capitals and small capitals. The first line of stanza 3 is too long for the column: «flames,—» runs over to a second, indented printed line; it is joined here. The print sets a thin space before «!», «;» and «:» («Lord !», «praise ;», «name ;», «names :», «infinite ;», «sight ;», «delight ;», «blest :», «rest :»); it is closed up here. «'t is» is printed as two words with the apostrophe before the «t», and is kept so. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's («defense»); the lines of each stanza are set flush (no indentation). No meter is printed (the text is L. M., 8.8.8.8).
