Worship — Attributes and Providence of God

There 's a wideness in God's mercy

  • No. 93
  • Words Frederick W. Faber.
  • 4 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

There 's a wideness in God's mercy,
Like the wideness of the sea;
There 's a kindness in his justice,
Which is more than liberty.

2

There is welcome for the sinner,
And more graces for the good;
There is mercy with the Saviour;
There is healing in his blood.

3

For the love of God is broader
Than the measure of man's mind,
And the heart of the Eternal
Is most wonderfully kind.

4

If our love were but more simple,
We should take him at his word;
And our lives would be all sunshine
In the sweetness of our Lord.

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «93» (large) at the foot of the left column of p. 34, below hymn 92; italic reference line «162, 41, 534.» (sing to the tune of hymn 162, 41 or 534 — the page OCR read «634»; the print has the italic 5 with its flat top stroke); four numbered stanzas; «Frederick W. Faber.» in italics at the end. The first word «THERE» is set in capitals and small capitals. «There 's» is printed with a space before the apostrophe in stanza 1 (lines 1 and 3) and is kept so, as in hymn 83. The print sets a thin space before «;» («sea ;», «good ;», «Saviour ;», «word ;»); it is closed up here. Spelling («Saviour»), punctuation and capitals are the print's. Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print. No meter is printed (the text is 8s & 7s, 8.7.8.7).
