Worship — Attributes and Providence of God

Though troubles assail, and dangers affright

  • No. 98
  • Words John Newton.
  • 6 stanzas

1

Though troubles assail, and dangers affright;
Though friends should all fail, and foes all unite,
Yet one thing secures us, whatever betide,
The promise assures us, "The Lord will provide."

2

The birds, without barn or store-house, are fed;
From them let us learn to trust for our bread;
His saints what is fitting shall ne'er be denied,
So long as 't is written, "The Lord will provide."

3

When Satan appears to close up our path,
And fills us with fears, we triumph by faith;
He cannot take from us, though oft he has tried,
The heart-cheering promise, "The Lord will provide."

4

He tells us we 're weak, our hope is in vain;
The good that we seek we ne'er shall obtain:
But when such suggestions our graces have tried,
This answers all questions, "The Lord will provide."

5

No strength of our own, nor goodness, we claim,
Our trust is all thrown on Jesus' dear name;
In this our strong tower, for safety we hide,
The Lord is our power—"The Lord will provide."

6

When life sinks apace, and death is in view,
The word of his grace shall comfort us through;
Not fearing or doubting, with Christ at our side,
We 'll still trust his promise,—"The Lord will provide."

The first word «THOUGH» is set in capitals and small capitals. «'t is», «we 're» and «We 'll» are printed with a space next to the apostrophe and are kept so. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «:» («fright ;», «fed ;», «bread ;», «faith ;», «vain ;», «obtain :», «name ;», «through ;»); it is closed up here. Printed curly quotes are written straight. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. The four lines of each stanza are printed flush (runover words indented).
