⤢ Full screenO thou that hearest prayer,
Attend our humble cry,
And let thy servants share
Thy blessing from on high:
We plead the promise of thy word;
Grant us thy Holy Spirit, Lord.
If earthly parents hear
Their children when they cry,
If they, with love sincere,
Their varied wants supply,
Much more wilt thou thy love display,
And answer when thy children pray.
Our heavenly Father, thou;
We children of thy grace;
O, let thy Spirit now
Descend and fill the place!
So shall we feel the heavenly flame,
And all unite to praise thy name.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head of the page «WORSHIP—HOLY SPIRIT.»; hymn number «167» (large, left), tune name «ZEBULON. H. M.» centred over the music, «LOWELL MASON.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «O»; only «hear-est», «At-tend», «hum-ble» and «Ho-ly» are printed hyphenated there. Stanzas 2 and 3 are printed as text in two columns below the music, under the reference line «252, 254, 359.» in italics (= may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 252, 254 or 359). «John Burton.» in italics after stanza 3 (the «Jo» is damaged on the plate). The text stanzas are numbered without a full stop («2 If»); they are numbered «2.» here like stanza 1. The print sets a thin space before «;», «:» and «!» («high :», «word ;», «thou ;», «place !»); it is closed up here. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print; lines 5 and 6 are flush.
