1

Lamp of our feet, whereby we trace
Our path when wont to stray;
Stream from the fount of heavenly grace;
Brook by the traveler's way;

2

Bread of our souls, whereon we feed;
True manna from on high;
Our guide and chart, wherein we read
Of realms beyond the sky.

3

Pillar of fire through watches dark,
And radiant cloud by day;
When waves would whelm our tossing bark,
Our anchor and our stay;

4

Word of the everlasting God;
Will of his glorious Son,—
Without thee how could earth be trod,
Or heaven itself be won?

5

Lord, grant us all aright to learn
The wisdom it imparts,
And to its heavenly teaching turn
With simple, childlike hearts.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: running head «WORSHIP—HOLY SCRIPTURES.»; hymn number «187» (large), tune name «BLISS. C. M.» centred over the music (condensed capitals and small capitals), «F. E. BELDEN.» at the right (capitals and small capitals); in the left margin, printed vertically and reading upward, «Copyrighted 1886 by F. E. Belden.». Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «Lamp»; under the staves «where-by» and «heaven - ly» are hyphenated, while «traveler's» is printed whole under two notes. Stanzas 2–5 are printed as text in the left column below the music, under the reference line «114, 147, 208.» in italics (= may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 114, 147 or 208). «Barton.» in italics after stanza 5. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «?» («feed ;», «high ;», «stay ;», «God ;», «won ?»); it is closed up here. The printer's curly apostrophe is written straight («traveler's»). In stanza 3 an ink blot of this exemplar covers the word after «would» and part of «by day»; «whelm» is the best reading of the hidden word, not seen on the page (see uncertainties.md). Stanza 3 line 3 runs over in the print («bark,» on a line of its own) and is joined here. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print.
