Words
⤢ Full screenGod's law demands one living faith,
And not a crowd of lifeless creeds;
Its warrant is a firm "God saith;"
Its claim not words, but living deeds.
Yet, Lord, forgive—thy holy law
Grows tarnished in our earthly clasp;
Pure in itself, without a flaw,
It dims in our too worldly grasp.
Forgive the sacrilege, and take
From every soul the unholy stain,
And help us for thy Son's dear sake,
To keep thy perfect law again.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «WORSHIP—LAW OF GOD.» (hymn 197 opens the section); hymn number «197» (large), tune name «WARREN. L. M.» centred over the music (condensed bold), «VIRGIL C. TAYLOR.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «God's»; under the staves «liv - ing» and «life - less» are hyphenated with spaces, «war-rant» with a tight hyphen, while «demands» is printed whole under two notes. Stanzas 2–3 are printed as text in the left column below the music, under the reference line «212, 101, 58.» in italics (= may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 212, 101 or 58). «Anon.» in italics after stanza 3. The print sets a thin space before «;» («creeds ;», «saith ;», «clasp ;»); it is closed up here. The printer's curly quotes and apostrophes are written straight («God's», «"God saith;"», «Son's»). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print.
