⤢ Full screenLord of the Sabbath, hear us pray
In this thy house, on this thy day;
Accept, as grateful sacrifice,
The songs which from thy temple rise.
Thine earthly Sabbaths, Lord, we love,
But there 's a nobler rest above;
To that our laboring souls aspire
With ardent hope and strong desire.
No more fatigue, no more distress,
No sin nor death can reach that place;
No tears shall mingle with the songs
That warble from immortal tongues.
No rude alarm of raging foes,
No cares to break the long repose,
No midnight shade, no clouded sun,
But sacred, high, eternal noon.
O long-expected day, begin!
Dawn on these realms of woe and sin;
Fain would I leave this weary road,
And go to meet my blessed Lord.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «WORSHIP—THE SABBATH.»; hymn number «223» (large), tune name «BURTON. L. M.» centred over the music (condensed bold), «ISAAC B. WOODBURY.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «Lord»; under the notes the print divides «Sab - bath,», «Ac - cept,», «grate-ful» (close hyphen), «sac - ri - fice,», «tem - ple». Stanzas 2–5 are printed as text in the left column below the music, under the reference line «215, 219, 58.» in italics (= may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 215, 219 or 58); «Philip Doddridge.» in italics after stanza 5. The stanza numbers of the text stanzas are printed without a full stop («2 Thine»); they are numbered «2.» here like stanza 1. Any thin space the print sets before «;» or «!» is closed up here (convention). «there 's» (stanza 2) is printed with a space before the apostrophe and is kept so (as in hymns 83, 93, 196). The lines of stanzas 2–5 are set flush (no indentation). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
