Lord, on this Sabbath-day of rest

  • No. 224
  • Words T. R. Williamson.
  • 4 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

Lord, on this Sabbath-day of rest
We lift to thee our earnest praise,
Obedient to the high behest
Which thou didst give to guide our ways.

2

We thank thee for the holy light
That from thy law shines full and clear,
Directing our weak steps aright
Through earth's low path of doubt and fear.

3

For Jesus, too, whom thou didst send
To teach the way of grace and truth,
We bow before thy throne, and blend
The thanks of age, the love of youth.

4

O, write thy word on every heart!
In us let thy pure Spirit live,
That his rich presence may impart
Such peace as thou alone canst give.

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «224» (large) with the reference line «108, 336, 171.» in italics beside it (sing to the tune of hymn 108, 336 or 171; the first digit of «336» is blotted — see uncertainties.md); stanzas 1–3 stand at the foot of the left column of p. 75, below hymn 223, and stanza 4 continues at the top of the right column, followed by «T. R. Williamson.» in italics. The first word «LORD» is set in capitals and small capitals. The stanza numbers are printed without a full stop («1 LORD»); they are numbered «1.» here. The last word of stanza 2 («fear.») is carried over to a line of its own in the print (the verse line is too long for the column); it is joined to its line here. Any thin space the print sets before «!» is closed up here (convention). The printer's curly apostrophe of «earth's» is written straight. Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. No meter is printed (the text is L. M., 8.8.8.8).
