⤢ Full screenHow sweet upon this sacred day,
The best of all the seven,
To cast our earthly thoughts away,
And think of God and heaven!
How sweet to be allowed to pray,
Our sins may be forgiven!
With filial confidence to say,
"Father, who art in heaven!"
How sweet the words of peace to hear
From him to whom 't is given
To wake the penitential tear,
And lead the way to heaven!
And if to make our sins depart,
In vain the will has striven,
He who regards the inmost heart
Will send his grace from heaven.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «WORSHIP—THE SABBATH.»; hymn number «230» (large), tune name «ELIZABETHTOWN. C. M.» centred over the music (condensed capitals and small capitals), «GEORGE KINGSLEY.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «How»; under the staves «up - on», «sa - cred», «earth - ly» and «a - way,» are hyphenated, and «seven» and «heaven» are sung as one syllable each. Stanzas 2–4 are printed as text in the left column below the music, under the reference line «201, 227, 114.» in italics (= may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 201, 227 or 114). «Mrs. Follen.» in italics after stanza 4. The print sets a thin space before «!» («forgiven !», «heaven !», «heaven !»); it is closed up here. The printer's curly quotes and apostrophe are written straight («"Father, …"», «'t is», printed with the space after the apostrophe). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print.
