Holy Sabbath, sacred rest

  • No. 241
  • Words R. F. Cottrell.
  • 4 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

Holy Sabbath, sacred rest,
Welcome to each waiting breast;
Cheering hour that points away
To eternity's glad day.

2

Ever since creation's birth,
Thou hast been to cheer our earth;
When the course of time began,
Thou wast made, and made for man.

3

While thou bringest peaceful rest,
Man by thee is doubly blest;
Thou dost tend our thoughts to raise
To our great Creator's praise.

4

Thus drawn nearer to our Lord,
Hearts attuned to sweet accord,
We shall hail the glorious day
When all flesh shall own thy sway.

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «241» (large) with the reference line «15, 339, 531,» in italics beside it (sing to the tune of hymn 15, 339 or 531; the line ends with a comma, not a period, in the print), at the foot of the left column of p. 80 below hymn 240; four stanzas, then «R. F. Cottrell.» in italics. The first word «HOLY» is set in capitals and small capitals. The print sets a thin space before «;» («breast ;», «earth ;», «blest ;»); it is closed up here. The printer's curly apostrophes are written straight («eternity's», «creation's», «Creator's»). The lines of each stanza are set flush (no indentation). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. No meter is printed (the text is 7s, like hymn 240).
