⤢ Full screenAgain the day returns of holy rest,
Which, when he made the world, Jehovah blest;
When, like his own, he bade our labors cease,
And all be piety, and all be peace.
Let us devote this consecrated day
To learn his will, and all we learn obey;
So shall he hear, when fervently we raise
Our supplications, and our songs of praise.
Lord of all worlds, incline thy gracious ear;
Thy children's voice in tender mercy hear;
Bear thy blest promise, fixed as hills, in mind,
And shed renewing grace on lost mankind.
Father in heaven, in whom our hopes confide,
Whose power defends us, and whose precepts guide,
Through life our surest guardian and friend,
Glory supreme be thine till time shall end.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «WORSHIP—THE SABBATH.»; hymn number «249» (large), tune name «FREEPORT. 10s.» centred over the music (condensed capitals and small capitals), «UNKNOWN.» at the right (capitals and small capitals) — the composer is printed as unknown. Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «Again»; under the staves «re - turns», «ho - ly» and «pi - e - ty,» are hyphenated, while the second half of each line is set as running words («Jehovah», «labors» unhyphenated). Stanzas 2–4 are printed as text in the left column directly below the music, with no reference line. «William Mason.» in italics after stanza 4. The print sets a thin space before «;» («obey ;», «ear ;», «hear ;»); it is closed up here. The apostrophe of «children's» is written straight. The long ten-syllable lines of stanzas 3 and 4 are broken by the narrow column («in / mind,», «hopes / confide,», «pre- / cepts guide,», «and / friend,»); they are joined here, one verse per line. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
