⤢ Full screenAs time rolls on amid earth's gloom profound,
And wearing toil presents a ceaseless round,
'T is good to have some way-marks on our road,
To cheer our hearts, and lift our thoughts to God.
The Sabbath to this end divinely blest,
Not only gives the body timely rest,
But by its influence helps our minds to raise
And tune our hearts to our Creator's praise.
Then hail the glad memorial of our King!
Let us give thanks, and join his praise to sing;
And learning uow to celebrate his praise,
So shall we sing of him through endless days.
About this hymn
As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «251» (large), with no reference line, in the right column of p. 83 below hymn 250; «R. F. Cottrell.» in italics after stanza 3. The first word «AS» is set in a capital and a small capital. The print sets a thin space before «!» and «;» («King !», «sing ;»); it is closed up here. The printer's curly apostrophes are written straight («earth's», «'T is», «Creator's»); «'T is» is printed with a space after the apostrophe, as here. Stanza 3 line 3 reads «learning uow» in the print (a turned «n»): kept as printed, see uncertainties. The long ten-syllable verses are broken by the narrow column («pro- / found,», «ceaseless / round,», «our / road,», «thoughts / to God.», «to / raise», «Creator's / praise.», «to / sing;», «endless / days.»); they are joined here, one verse per line. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. No meter is printed (the text is 10s., like FREEPORT on the same page).
