Words
⤢ Full screenEternal Father, God of love,
Creator of the universe,
Pour out thy Spirit from above
As from thy temple we disperse.
Keep thou our lips, that all we say
May honor thee, our God and King;
That our example day by day
May teach the sacred truths we sing.
Direct our wayward steps aright,
Our Guide and Guard forever be;
In thine eternal arms of might
Infold and draw us nearer thee.
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «WORSHIP—CLOSING HYMNS.»; hymn number «262» (large), tune name «MASON. L. M.» centred over the music (condensed capitals and small capitals), «F. E. BELDEN.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). In the left margin of the music, set vertically: «Copyrighted 1886» (system 2) and «by F. E. Belden.» (system 1). Stanza 1 is interlinear, between the staves, one line per system, with «1.» before «E»; under the staves «E - ter - nal», «Cre - a - tor», «u - ni-verse,», «Spir - it», «tem - ple» and «dis - perse.» are hyphenated, «Fa-ther,» and «a-bove» with a tight hyphen. Stanzas 2–3 are printed as text in the left column below the music, under the reference line «223, 212, 54.» in italics (= may also be sung to the tunes of hymns 223, 212 or 54). «F. E. Belden.» in italics after stanza 3. The print sets a thin space before «;» («King ;», «be ;»); it is closed up here. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's («honor», «Infold»). Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print.
