⤢ Full screenFor the mercies of the day,
For this rest upon our way,
Thanks to thee alone be given,
Lord of earth and King of heaven!
Oft our services have been
Mingled with the taint of sin;
But thou canst and wilt forgive;
By thy grace alone we live.
While this thorny path we tread,
May thy love our footsteps lead;
When our journey here is past,
May we rest with thee at last.
Let these earthly Sabbaths prove
Foretastes of our joys above,
While their steps thy children bend
To the rest that knows no end.
About this hymn
As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «273» (large) at the foot of the left column of p. 90, below hymn 272 («John Newton.»), with the reference line «15, 407, 531.» in bold italic figures beside it (sing to the tune of hymn 15, 407 or 531). Four numbered stanzas of four lines, all lines at the same margin (no indentation), «James Montgomery.» in italics at the end. The first word «FOR» is set in capitals and small capitals. The print sets a thin space before «!» and «;» («heaven !», «sin ;», «lead ;») and a space before the comma of «above ,»; they are closed up here. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. No meter is printed (the text is 7s, four lines).
