⤢ Full screenChorus.
Shout the glad tidings, exultingly sing;
Jerusalem triumphs, Messiah is King!
Zion, the marvelous story be telling,
The Son of the Highest, how lowly his birth!
The brightest of angels in glory excelling,
He stoops to redeem thee, is born upon earth!
Cho.—Shout the glad tidings, etc.
Tell how he cometh; from nation to nation,
The heart-cheering news let the earth echo round;
How free to the faithful he offers salvation!
His people with joy everlasting are crowned!
Cho.—Shout the glad tidings, etc.
Cho.—Shout the glad tidings, etc.
Mortals, your homage be gratefully bringing,
And sweet let the gladsome hosanna arise;
Ye angels, the full hallelujah be singing;
One chorus resound through the earth and the skies.
Cho.—Shout the glad tidings, etc.
Chorus after last verse.
Shout the glad tidings, exultingly sing,
Jerusalem triumphs, Messiah is King,
Messiah is King, Messiah is King!
About this hymn
As printed As printed: running head «CHRIST—FIRST ADVENT.»; hymn number «300» (large), tune name «AVISON. 11s & 10s.» centred (capitals and small capitals), «C. AVISON.» at the right (capitals and small capitals). The music opens with the chorus: «CHORUS.» (small capitals) stands above the treble at the start of system 1, and the chorus words are the first words under the staves; stanza 1 follows in the same line, with «1.» before «Zion,», and runs through systems 2 and 3. Over the end of stanza 1 the print has «Close with 1st Chorus.» (italics); after it, «Chorus after last verse.» (italics, under the treble staff) heads a longer final chorus (end of system 3 and system 4) in which «Messiah is King» is sung three times. Stanzas 2 and 3 are printed as text in two columns below the music (stanza 2 left, stanza 3 right), each one between two lines «CHO.—Shout the glad tidings, etc.» («CHO.» in small capitals, written «Cho.» here) — so the line stands four times, twice between stanzas 2 and 3 (foot of the left column, head of the right column); it is reproduced four times below, in the print's order (the line between stanzas 1 and 2 is the one printed at the head of the left column). The chorus words under the music are not repeated with stanzas 2 and 3. «William A. Muhlenberg.» in italics at the foot of the right column. Under the staves the chorus is printed «exulting-ly sing; . . .» (first chorus) and «ex- / ult-ing-ly sing, . . .» (final chorus): the three dots stand under the melisma of «sing». The print sets a thin space before «;» and «!» («sing ;», «King !», «birth !», «earth !», «cometh ;», «round ;», «salvation !», «crowned !», «arise ;», «singing ;»); it is closed up here. Verse lines too long for the column turn over in the print («from nation to / nation,», «echo / round;», «are / crowned!», «bring- / ing,», «hosanna / arise;», «the earth / and the skies.»); each is set here as one verse line, and «bring- / ing,» (broken only by the line end) is joined. In the text columns lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented. «marvelous» (one «l»), «hallelujah», «hosanna» and all punctuation and capitals are the print's. Order of singing: see `uncertainties.md` (chorus — stanza — chorus …, the final chorus after the last stanza).
