How sweetly flowed the gospel soundFrom lips of gentleness and grace,When listening thousands gathered round,And joy and gladness filled the place!

2

From heaven he came, of heaven he spoke,To heaven he led his followers' way;Dark clouds of gloomy night he broke,Unvailing an immortal day.

3

He points us to his Father's home,"Come, all ye weary ones, and rest;"Yes, sacred Teacher, we will come,Obey thee, love thee, and be blest!

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «307» (large) with the reference line «171, 104, 343.» in italics beside it (sing to the tune of hymn 171, 104 or 343), in the right column of p. 101 below hymn 306 and «Sarum Breviary.»; three stanzas, then «Sir John Bowring.» in italics. The first word «HOW» is set in capitals and small capitals. The stanza numbers are printed without a period («1» … «3»); they are written «1.» … here, as in the other deliveries of this book. The print sets a thin space before «!» and «;» («place !», «way ;», «rest ;"», «blest !») and after the opening quotation mark («" Come»); they are closed up here. The printer's curly apostrophes and quotation marks are written straight («followers'», «Father's», «"Come, all ye weary ones, and rest;"»). «Unvailing» is the print's spelling. No meter is printed (the text is L. M., like the referenced tunes). Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
