Christ — Life and Character

Behold, where, in a mortal form

  • No. 309
  • Words William Enfield.
  • 4 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

Behold, where, in a mortal form,
Appears each grace divine!
The virtues, all in Jesus met,
With mildest radiance shine.

2

To spread the rays of heavenly light,
To give the mourner joy,
To preach glad tidings to the poor,
Was his divine employ.

3

'Mid keen reproach and cruel scorn,
He meek and patient stood;
His foes, ungrateful, sought his life,
Who labored for their good.

4

Be Christ our pattern and our guide,
His image may we bear;
O, may we tread his holy steps
Till we his glory share!

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «309» (large) with the reference line «546, 201, 117.» in italics beside it (sing to the tune of hymn 546, 201 or 117); the hymn stands in the lower half of the left column of p. 102, below hymn 308, and ends there with «William Enfield.» in italics. The first word «BEHOLD» is set in capitals and small capitals. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «!» («divine !», «stood ;», «bear ;», «share !»); it is closed up here. The printer's curly apostrophe is written straight («'Mid»). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's («labored»). Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print. No meter is printed (the text is C. M., 8.6.8.6, like the three tunes of the reference line).
