The Sinner — Christ the Way of Life

Like sheep we went astray

  • No. 382
  • Words Isaac Watts.
  • 4 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

Like sheep we went astray,And broke the fold of God,—Each wandering in a different way,But all the downward road.

2

How dreadful was the hour,When God our wanderings laid,And did at once his vengeance pourUpon the Shepherd's head!

3

How glorious was the grace,When Christ sustained the stroke! His life and blood the Shepherd pays,A ransom for the flock.

4

But God shall raise his headO'er all the sons of men,And make him see a numerous seed,To recompense his pain.

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «382» (large) with the reference line «236, 89, 191.» in italics beside it (sing to the tune of hymn 236, 89 or 191); the hymn opens the right column of p. 125, below the music of hymn 380, and ends with «Isaac Watts.» in italics, above hymn 383. The first word «LIKE» is set in capitals and small capitals. The print sets a thin space before «!» («head !», «stroke !»); it is closed up here. The printer's curly apostrophes are written straight («Shepherd's», «O'er»). Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's («God,—», «Shepherd»). No meter is printed (the text is S. M., 6.6.8.6, like the three tunes of the reference line).
