The Sinner — Christ the Way of Life

God's holy law, transgressed

  • No. 381
  • Words Benjamin Beddome.
  • 4 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

God's holy law, transgressed,Speaks nothing but despair;Burdened with guilt, with grief oppressed,We find no comfort there.

2

Not all our groans and tears,Nor works which we have done,Nor vows, nor promises, nor prayers,Can e'er for sin atone.

3

Relief alone is foundIn Jesus' precious blood;'Tis this that heals the mortal wound,And reconciles to God.

4

High lifted on the cross,The spotless Victim dies; This is salvation's only source,Whence all our hopes arise.

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «381» (large) with the reference line «89, 403, 11.» in italics beside it (sing to the tune of hymn 89, 403 or 11); the hymn stands in the lower half of the left column of p. 125, below hymn 380, and ends at the foot of that column with «Benjamin Beddome.» in italics. The first word «GOD'S» is set in capitals and small capitals («GOD» + «'s»). The print sets a thin space before «;» («despair ;», «blood ;», «dies ;»); it is closed up here. The printer's curly apostrophes are written straight («God's», «e'er», «Jesus'», «'Tis», «salvation's»). Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's («Victim»). No meter is printed (the text is S. M., 6.6.8.6, like the three tunes of the reference line).
