The Sinner — Christ the Way of Life

My former hopes are fled

  • No. 385
  • Words William Cowper.
  • 3 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

My former hopes are fled,My terror now begins;I feel, alas! that I am deadIn trespasses and sins.

2

Ah! whither shall I fly?I hear the thunder roar; The law proclaims destruction nigh,And vengeance at the door.

3

When I review my ways,I dread impending doomUntil a friendly whisper says,"Flee from the wrath to come."

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «385» (large) with the reference line «89, 191, 403.» in italics beside it (sing to the tune of hymn 89, 191 or 403); the hymn stands in the lower half of the left column of p. 126, below hymn 384, and ends at the foot of that column with «William Cowper.» in italics. The first word «MY» is set in capitals and small capitals. The print sets a thin space before «;», «!» and «?» («begins ;», «alas !», «Ah !», «fly ?», «roar ;»); it is closed up here. The printer's curly quotation marks are written straight («"Flee from the wrath to come."»). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's. Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print, except the last line of stanza 3, which is set flush with line 3 (not indented); it is written so here (see uncertainties). No meter is printed (the text is S. M., 6.6.8.6, like the three tunes of the reference line).
