  • Tune HARVEST.
  • Words Anon.
  • Music William B. Bradbury.
  • Key A major
  • Time 2/4
  • 5 stanzas
1

Hark, sinner, while God from on high doth entreat thee,And warnings with accents of mercy doth blend;Give ear to his voice, lest in judgment he meet thee,"The harvest is passing, the summer will end."

Refrain

The harvest is passing, the summer will end;The harvest is passing, the summer will end.

2

How oft of thy danger and guilt he hath told thee! How oft still the message of mercy doth send!Haste, haste, while he waits in his arms to enfold thee;"The harvest is passing, the summer will end."

3

Despised and rejected, at length he may leave thee:What anguish and horror thy bosom will rend! Then haste thee, O sinner, while he will receive thee;"The harvest is passing, the summer will end."

4

Ere long, and Jehovah will come in his power; Our God will arise, with his foes to contend;Haste, haste thee, O sinner! prepare for that hour!"The harvest is passing, the summer will end."

5

The Saviour will call thee in judgment before him;O, bow to his scepter, and make him thy friend! Now yield him thy heart, and make haste to adore him;Thy harvest is passing, thy summer will end.

About this hymn

As printed As printed: running head «THE SINNER—WARNING AND INVITATION.»; hymn number «427» (large), tune name «HARVEST. 12s & 11s. P.» centred over the music (condensed capitals and small capitals; the «P.» smaller), «WILLIAM B. BRADBURY.» at the right (capitals and small capitals); printed vertically in the left margin beside system 2, reading upwards, «By per. Biglow & Main.». Stanza 1 is interlinear in system 1, two lines between braces with «1.» before the opening brace: the first line is sung the first time through system 1, the second on the repeat (end-repeat sign at the end of the system). System 2 is headed «Refrain.» and carries the refrain once, without a stanza number; it is sung after every stanza. In the interlinear lines «warnings» and «accents» are printed whole under two notes each; «sin-ner», «en-treat», «judg-ment» (faint hyphen), «sum-mer» with tight hyphens, «mer - cy», «har - vest», «pass - ing» spaced (the refrain has «har - vest» spaced once, all its other hyphens tight). Stanzas 2–5 are printed as text below the music: stanzas 2–4 and the first two lines of stanza 5 in the left column, the last two lines of stanza 5 at the top of the right column, then «Anon.» in bold italics; each long line is broken in two by the column (turnover indented) and is written here as one verse line. No reference line is printed (the hymn has its own tune). The stanza numbers of the text stanzas are printed without a full stop («2 How»); they are numbered «2.» here like stanza 1. The print sets a thin space before «;», «:» and «!» («thee !», «send !», «thee ;», «leave thee :»); it is closed up here; quotation marks are written straight. Stanzas 1–4 end with the quoted line «"The harvest is passing, the summer will end."»; stanza 5 ends «Thy harvest is passing, thy summer will end.» without quotation marks, as printed. Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's («Saviour», «scepter»). Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print. Below this hymn in the right column stand the four text stanzas of hymn 426 «[See No. 426, on opposite page.] P. M.» — they belong to hymn 426 (music on p. 138) and are not part of this file.
