The Sinner — Repentance and Acceptance

O for that tenderness of heart

  • No. 448
  • Words Charles Wesley.
  • 3 stanzas
  • Words only in the original
1

O for that tenderness of heartThat bows before the Lord; That owns how just and good thou art,And trembles at thy word!

2

O for those humble, contrite tearsWhich from repentance flow; That sense of guilt which, trembling, fearsThe long-suspended blow!

3

O, fill my soul with faith and love,And strength to do thy will;Raise my desires and hopes above,—Thyself to me reveal.

About this hymn

As printed Words only. As printed: hymn number «448» (large) with the reference line «179, 201, 395.» in italics beside it (sing to the tune of hymn 179, 201 or 395); the three stanzas stand at the top of the right column of p. 145, with «Charles Wesley.» in italics after stanza 3. The first words are set «O FOR», the «O» as a full capital and «FOR» in small capitals; written in ordinary type here. The stanza numbers are printed without a period («1» … «3»); written «1.» … here as in the other deliveries of this book. In stanza 2 the word «fears» is printed on a turnover line of its own (the verse line did not fit the column width); it is joined to its verse line here. The print sets a thin space before «;» and «!» («Lord ;», «word !», «flow ;», «blow !», «will ;»); it is closed up here. Lines 2 and 4 of each stanza are indented in the print. No meter is printed (the text is C. M., 8.6.8.6, like the referenced tunes). Spelling, punctuation and capitals are the print's.
